Welsh Castles at War |

![]() |
Wales has a greater concentration of castles than any other country and visitors from all over the world come to visit these architectural marvels where the walls still echo with historic deeds. With their majestic and often dramatic locations these sites have served to inspire generations of artists and poets. Welsh Castles at War is a vivid and exciting portrayal of how and why castles were raised in Wales after the Norman Conquest, and how they became the scenes of particularly bloody, large-scale campaigns in the violent wars between Wales and England. Chapters include the permanent establishment of castles in the eleventh century and continue with their use during the Civil War of the seventeenth century. John Norris was born and educated on Jersey in the Channel Islands and now lives in South Wales. He works as a battlefield tour guide, photographer and researcher and has written many books on military history. Cover picture: Tower and walls of Kidwelly Castle, Carmarthenshire |
